The iconic orange tiled wall at The National has become a symbol of Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood. Harry Caplan, the owner of National Products, sought an eye-catching stylistic exterior to draw attention and business to his kitchen products showroom. Several up-and-coming architects from the area were involved in the ground-breaking design of the wall. The design is an expression of American commercial vitality during the post-war economic expansion in the 1950s.

The installation of the wall’s first phase was initiated in 1957 and completed in 1958. The second phase of the wall was completed in 1965 on the north side of the building after an additional parcel was purchased next door to the original structures. The distinctive facade was nominated to the Register of Historic Places because of its street presence, unique modern design and significant character.
